Traditional Microneedling VS RF Microneedling: What’s the difference and Which is right for you?

By: Nurse Kiran

There has been a lot of buzz around microneedling leading to its rise as one of the most popular treatments for improving texture, tone and overall skin health. But with the rise of RF (radio frequency) Microneedling, many people are asking:

What’s the difference between microneedling and RF microneedling - and which is the right one for me?

Let’s break it down so you can understand what each treatment actually does and which is the best option for you and your goals.

Traditional Microneedling

Mechanical microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) uses a small handheld device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. These tiny micro channels stimulate your body’s natural healing process which leads to increased collagen production (up to 400% increase after each session), improved skin texture and tone & better absorption of medical grade skincare.

Best for:

  • Early signs of aging

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven texture (mild to moderate acne scars & enlarged pores)

  • Dullness

  • Preventative collagen stimulation

Downtime is roughly 1-3 days of mild redness and dryness or light flaking.

Radiofrequency Microneedling

Radiofrequency(RF) microneedling, as the name suggests, combines microneedling and RF energy to penetrate the skin and deliver heat deep into the dermis. Along with all the benefits of traditional microneedling the heat from the RF energy stimulates elastin production which helps tighten tissue and stimulates a more intense collagen remodeling in the deeper levels of the dermis.

Best for:

  • Deeper set wrinkles

  • Skin tightening without surgery (jawline, neck and lower face definition)

  • Early jowling

  • Moderate skin laxity

  • Post-weight loss skin changes

  • Uneven texture (moderate to severe acne scars & enlarged pores)

  • Thinning/Crepey skin

Downtime is roughly 2-5 days of mild redness and sensitivity (similar to a mild sunburn)

The right treatment for you depends entirely on your skin goals;

  • Brighter, smoother skin, or maintenance treatment = Traditional Microneedling

  • All of the above plus tighter, firmer skin or deeper scarring? = RF Microneedling.

Traditional and RF microneedling are proven and powerful treatments working on different depths of the skin and there is no one-size fits all answer.
